Lyrics for the Day – Sometimes I Feel Like I’ve Been Tied to the Whippin’ Post

This time it was the Oscars, and particularly sermons from winners.

th (1).jpg

I’ve been run down
And I’ve been lied to
And I don’t know why
I let that mean woman make me a fool
She took all my money
Wrecks my new car
Now she’s with one of my good time buddies
Drinkin’ in some cross-town bar

Sometimes I feel
Sometimes I feel
Like I been tied
To the whippin’ post
Tied to the whippin’ post
Tied to the whippin’ post
Good Lord, I feel like I’m dyin’

My friends tell me
That I’ve been such a fool
But I had to stand by and take it baby
All for lovin’ you
Drown myself in sorrow
As I look at what you’ve done
But nothing seemed to change
The bad times stayed the same
And I can’t run

Sometimes I feel
Sometimes I feel
Like I been tied
To the whippin’ post
Tied to the whippin’ post
Tied to the whippin’ post
Good Lord I feel like I’m dyin’

Sometimes I feel
Sometimes I feel
Like I been tied
To the whippin’ post
Tied to the whippin’ post
Tied to the whippin’ post
Good Lord I feel like I’m dyin’

Lyrics for the day – Pompeii

Saw a locally based a cappella group last night. Five male voices and one does base/drums/rhythm with vocal tricks. They’re called FACE and you should definitely see them if you get the chance. They did a cover of a favorite tune from Dr. Reptile’s Greatest Hits 2014

I was left to my own devices
Many days fell away with nothing to show

And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Great clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above

But if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like
Nothing changed at all
And if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like
You’ve been here before
How am I gonna be an optimist about this
How am I gonna be an optimist about this

We were caught up and lost in all of our vices
In your pose as the dust settled around us

And the walls kept tumbling down
In the city that we love
Great clouds roll over the hills
Bringing darkness from above

But if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
Nothing changed at all
And if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like
You’ve been here before?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this
How am I gonna be an optimist about this

Oh where do we begin
The rubble or our sins
Oh oh where do we begin
The rubble or our sins

And the walls kept tumbling down (oh where do we begin?)
In the city that we love (the rubble or our sins?)
Great clouds roll over the hills (oh where do we begin?)
Bringing darkness from above (the rubble or our sins?)

But if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like
Nothing changed at all
And if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like
You’ve been here before
How am I gonna be an optimist about this
How am I gonna be an optimist about this

If you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like nothing changed at all

Lyrics for the Day – The Angels Wanna Wear My Red Shoes

That sounds about right — I used to be disgusted, now I try to be amused…

th.jpg

Oh I used to be disgusted
And now I try to be amused
But since their wings have got rusted
You know the angels wanna wear my red shoes
But when they told me ’bout their side of the bargain
That’s when I knew that I could not refuse
And I won’t get any older
Now the angels wanna wear my red shoes
I was watching while you’re dancing away
Our love got fractured in the echo and sway
How come everybody wants to be your friend
You know that it still hurts me just to say it

Oh, I know that she’s disgusted (oh why’s that)
Cause she’s feeling so abused. (oh that’s too bad)
She gets tired of the lust (oh I’m so sad)
But it’s so hard to refuse
How can you say that I’m too old
When the angels have stolen my red shoes

Oh, I said I’m so happy that I could die
She said drop dead then left with another guy
That’s what you get if you go chasing after vengeance
Ever since you got me punctured this has been my sentence
Oh I used to be disgusted
But now I try to be amused
But since their wings have got rusted
You know the angels wanna wear my red shoes
But when they told me ’bout their side of the bargain
That’s when I knew that I could not refuse
And I won’t get any older
Now the angels wanna wear my red shoes
Oh I won’t get any older
Now the angels wanna wear my red shoes
Red shoes
The angels wanna wear my red shoes…

More Lyrics for the Day – Stuck In The Middle With You

A college friend sent these lyrics after the latest round of Presidential debates and endorsements. Dr. Reptile doesn’t consider himself in the middle but it sure seemed apropos.

th.jpg

Well, I don’t know why I came here tonight
I got the feeling that something ain’t right
I’m so scared in case I fall off my chair
And I’m wondering how I’ll get down the stairs
Clowns to the left of me
Jokers to the right
Here I am
Stuck in the middle with you

Yes, I’m stuck in the middle with you
And I’m wondering what it is I should do
It’s so hard to keep this smile from my face
Losing control, yeah, I’m all over the place
Clowns to the left of me
Jokers to the right
Here I am
Stuck in the middle with you

Well, you started off with nothing
And you’re proud that you’re a self-made man
And your friends they all come crawlin’
Slap you on the back and say, Please
Please

Trying to make some sense of it all
But I can see it makes no sense at all
Is it cool to go to sleep on the floor?
Well, I don’t think that I can take anymore
Clowns to the left of me
Jokers to the right
Here I am
Stuck in the middle with you

Well, you started out with nothing
And you’re proud that you’re a self-made man
And your friends they all come crawlin’
Slap you on the back and say, Please
Please

Yeah, I don’t know why I came here tonight
I got the feeling that something ain’t right
I’m so scared in case I fall off my chair
And I’m wondering how I’ll get down the stairs
Clowns to the left of me
Jokers to the right
Here I am
Stuck in the middle with you

Yes, I’m
Stuck in the middle with you
Stuck in the middle with you
Here I am
Stuck in the middle with you

Lyrics for the day – We Gotta Get Out Of This Place

The Loft’s closed FB page is doing music book covers for this ACF (album cover Friday). This one would be great for an audio/visual edition that includes the Animals playing in the background.51N7t8F0QZL._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

In this dirty old part of the city
Where the sun refuse to shine
People tell me there ain’t no use in trying
Now my girl you’re so young and pretty
And one thing I know is true
You’ll be dead before your time is due
I know

Watch my daddy in bed and tired
Watch his hair been turning gray
He’s been working and slaving his life away
Oh yes, I know it
He’s been working so hard
I’ve been working too babe
Every night and day
Yeah yeah yeah yeah
We gotta get out of this place
If its the last thing we ever do
We gotta get out of this place
‘Cause girl, there’s a better life
For me and you

Now my girl you’re so young and pretty
And one thing I know is true, yeah
You’ll be dead before your time is due
I know it
Watch my daddy in bed and tired
Watch his hair been turning gray
He’s been working and slaving his life away
I know
He’s been working so hard
I’ve been working too babe
Every day baby
Yeah yeah yeah yeah
We gotta get out of this place
If its the last thing we ever do
We gotta get out of this place
Girl, there’s a better life
For me and you
Somewhere baby
Somehow I know it baby
We gotta get out of this place
If its the last thing we ever do
We gotta get out of this place
Girl, there’s a better life for me and you
Believe me baby

Lyrics for the day – Still You Turn Me On…

Not sure how I got back on ELP — maybe I’m just a Lucky Man. Or it just don’t mean a thing…

th.jpg

Do you wanna be an angel
Do you wanna be a star
Do you wanna play some magic on my guitar
Do you wanna be a poet
Do you wanna be my string
You could be anything

Do you wanna be the lover of another
Undercover you could even be the man on the moon

Do you wanna be the player
Do you wanna be the string
Let me tell you something
It just don’t mean a thing

You see it really doesn’t matter
When you’re buried in disguise
By the dark glass on your eyes
Though your flesh has crystallized

Still
You turn me on
Still
You turn me on
Mmmm
You turn me on

Do you wanna be the pillow where I lay my head
Do you wanna be the feathers lying in my bed
Do you wanna be the cover of a magazine
Create a scene

Every day a little sadder
A little madder
Someone get me a ladder

Do you wanna be the singer
Do you wanna be the song
Let me tell you something
You just couldn’t be more wrong

You see I really have to tell you
That it all gets so intense
From my experience
It just doesn’t seem to make sense

Still
You turn me on
Mmmm
You turn me on
Mmmm
You turn me on

Lyrics for the Day

This is another one of those songs that brings back the memories and also one for the theme playlist of songs that mention other artists in the lyrics.

th (2).jpg

I’m just a lonesome LA cowboy
Hangin’ out
Hanging’ on
To your window ledge
Callin’ your name
From midnight until dawn
I been smokin’ dope
Snortin’ coke
Trying to write a song
Forgettin’ everything I know
‘Til the next line comes along
Forgettin’ everything I know
‘Til the next line
Comes along

There’s so many pretty people in the city
I swear some of them are girls
I meet ’em down at Barney’s Beanery
With their platform heels and spit curls
I buy ’em drinks
We smoke our hopes
Try to make it one more night
But when I’m left all alone at last
I feel like I’ll die from fright

Well, I know Chris and Rita
And Marty Mull
Are meeting at the Troubadour
We’ll git it on with the Joy of Cooking
While the crowd cries out for more
‘Round six o’clock this morning
I’ll be getting’ kind of slow
When all the shows are over, honey
Tell me
Where do you think I go?

I’m just a lonesome LA cowboy
Hangin’ out
Hanging’ on
To your window ledge
Callin’ your name
From midnight until dawn
I been smokin’ dope
Snortin’ coke
Trying to write a song
Forgettin’ everything I know
‘Til the next line comes along
Forgettin’ everything I know
‘Til the next line
Comes along
