Lyrics for All Time — A Whiter Shade of Pale

Memories of this from the summer of ’67 on Carnaby Street in London on a choir tour of Europe. Then seeing it close up at a concert at Princeton around ’72 when Gary Brooker announced that they hadn’t done the song in quite awhile but would do it that night.

We skipped the light fandango
Turned cartwheels cross the floor
I was feeling kinda seasick
But the crowd called out for more
The room was humming harder
As the ceiling flew away
When we called out for another drink
The waiter brought a tray

And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face at first just ghostly
Turned a whiter shade of pale

She said there is no reason
And the truth is plain to see
But I wandered through my playing cards
And would not let her be
One of sixteen vestal virgins
Who were leaving for the coast
And although my eyes were open
They might have just as well’ve been closed

And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face at first just ghostly
Turned a whiter shade of pale

She said I’m home on shore leave
Though in truth we were at sea
So I took her by the looking glass
And forced her to agree
Saying you must be the mermaid
Who took Neptune for a ride
But she smiled at me so sadly
That my anger straightway died

And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face at first just ghostly
Turned a whiter shade of pale

If music be the food of love
Then laughter is its queen
And likewise if behind is in front
Then dirt in truth is clean
My mouth by then like cardboard
Seemed to slip straight through my head
So we crash-dived straightway quickly
And attacked the ocean bed

And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly
Turned a whiter shade of pale

Here’s one from the NUMBERS playlist

th (1).jpg

One, two, three, four
Tell me that you love me more
Sleepless long nights
That is what my youth was for
Old teenage hopes are alive at your door
Left you with nothing but they want some more

Oh, uh oh
You’re changing your heart
Oh, uh oh
You know who you are

Sweetheart
Bitter heart
Now I can tell you apart
Cozy and cold
Put the horse before the cart
Those teenage hopes who have tears in their eyes
Too scared to own up to one little lie

Oh, uh oh
You’re changing your heart
Oh, uh oh
You know who you are

One, two, three, four, five, six, nine, or ten
Money can’t buy you back the love that you had then
One, two, three, four, five, six, nine, or ten
Money can’t buy you back the love that you had then

Oh, uh oh
You’re changing your heart
Oh, uh oh
You know who you are
Oh, uh oh
You’re changing your heart
Oh, uh oh
You know who you are
Who you are
Who you are

For the teenage boys
They’re breaking your heart
For the teenage boys
They’re breaking your heart

Lyrics for the Day (and forever) – Love Radiates Around

A classic Roches song even if written by a guy – Mark Johnson

th (2).jpg

Beyond this world
Came a power
Struck into me
I don’t know how
It happened slow
I want you to know
Her love is true music
And it radiates around

Here comes a new day
Clouds roll away
Don’t ask me
I don’t know a thing
Let’s drive to town
Across the border line
Her love is true music
And it radiates around

My chance for true happiness
It waits upon her kiss
How can it be
It feels so good to know all this
My heart may break
And it might fall
She is mine and I am hers
Through seasons all
Let’s drive to town
Across the borderline
Her love is true music
And it radiates around
Her love is true music
And it radiates around

My chance for true happiness
It waits upon her kiss
How can it be
It feels so good to know all this
My heart may break
And it might fall
She is mine and I am hers
Through seasons all
Let’s drive to town
Across the borderline
Her love is true music
And it radiates around
Her love is true music
And it radiates around
Love…
Her love is true music
And it radiates around

Lyrics for the Day – Last Time Around

Here’s one that led to a theme playlist

th (3).jpg

Well a vial of love
You used to save
But even that’s distilled away
Locked inside a closet made of sand
Well the silver anesthetized your veins
Like the chilling damp December rain
But can you look at me
As if you still don’t see?
The last time around
I’m the final survivor in your heart’s ghost town
It’s the last time around

Well, I watched the storm engulf you in
Like the death cries of a wounded friend
Just beyond the reach of Satan’s grasp
And now I feel it in your baby’s breath
You’ll never find your hero’s death
To ease the pain
Of always being sane

‘Cause it’s the last time around
I’m the final survivor in your heart’s ghost town
It’s the last time around

And like the snows of May
Will your spirit fade away
Like a spent gold mine
Is it gone
Time will tell
We all will see
The Wrath of Judgement dancing free
Down the one way corridor of fame
But a question still can answer why
Like a baby’s first baptism cry
Still do you bear
Still do you hear?

The last time around
I’m the final survivor in your heart’s ghost town
It’s the last time around
‘Cause it’s the last time around
I’m the final survivor in your heart’s ghost town
It’s the last time around
The last time around
I’m the final survivor in your heart’s ghost town
It’s the last time around
Last time around
Last time around
Last time around
Last time around

Lyrics for the Day – Nothin’ But The Wheel

Another classic from the J Geils Band – Peter Wolf

th (1).jpg

When I’m passed on the boulevards
Out here underneath the stars
I’ve been flyin’ past the houses, farms and fields
Leavin’ all I know back home
Rushin’ through the cold night air
I’m holdin’ on to nothin’ but the wheel
Stayin’ clear of the interstate
I’m seekin’ out those old two lanes
An’ tryin’ to explain the way I feel
Till all at once it’s half past three
An’ it’s down to the trust and me
An’ I’m holdin’ on to nothing but the wheel
I’ve been tryin’ to drive you off my mind
Let it that way be
I can leave it all behind
An’ 41 goes on and on
An’ the lights go winding in the dawn
An’ the sky’s the color now of polished steel
An’ the only thing I know for sure
You don’t want me anymore
Then I’m holdin’ on to nothing but the wheel
All right
Come on

I’ve been tryin’ to drive you off my mind
An’ let it that way baby
I can leave it all behind
An’ the only thing I know for sure
Is you don’t want me anymore
An’ I’m holdin’ on to nothing but the wheel
An’ I’m holdin’ on to nothing but the wheel

Gettin’ down old 41
An’ 41 takes on and on
An’ the lights go winding in the dawn
An’ I’m holdin’ on in the corner, yeah
I’m holdin’ on, holdin’ on, holdin’ on, holdin’ on
An’ the only thing I know for sure
Is you don’t want me anymore
An’ I’m holdin’ on to nothin’ but the wheel
Oh yeah
Come on

Lyrics for the Day — Our Town

Part of the TOWN playlist

th (3).jpg

And you know the sun’s settin’ fast
And just like they say
Nothing good ever lasts
Well, go on now and kiss it goodbye
But hold on to your lover
‘Cause your heart’s bound to die
Go on now and say goodbye
To our town
To our town
Can’t you see the sun’s settin’ down
On our town
On our town
Goodnight

Up the street beside the red neon lights
That’s where I met my baby on one hot summer night
He was the tender and I ordered a beer
It’s been forty years and I’m still sitting here
But you know the sun’s settin’ fast
And just like they say
Nothing good ever lasts
Well, go on now and kiss it goodbye
But hold on to your lover
‘Cause your heart’s bound to die
Go on now and say goodbye to our town
To our town
Can’t you see the sun’s settin’ down
On our town
On our town
Goodnight

It’s here I had my babies and I had my first kiss
I’ve walked down Main Street in the cold morning mist
Over there is where I bought my first car
It turned over once but then it never went far
And I can see the sun’s settin’ fast
And just like they say
Nothing good ever lasts
Well go on now and kiss it goodbye
But hold on to your lover
‘Cause your heart’s bound to die
Go on now and say goodbye
To our town
To our town
Can’t you see the sun’s settin’ down
On our town
On our town
Goodnight

I buried my Mama and I buried my Pa
They sleep up the street beside that pretty brick wall
I bring them flowers about every day
But I just gotta cry when I think what they’d say
If they could see how the sun’s settin’ fast
And just like they say
Nothing good ever lasts
Well, go on now and kiss it goodbye
But hold on to your lover
‘Cause your heart’s bound to die
Go on now and say goodbye
To our town
To our town
Can’t you see the sun’s settin’ down
On our town
On our town
Goodnight

Now I sit on the porch and watch the lightning-bugs fly
But I can’t see too good
I got tears in my eyes
I’m leaving tomorrow but I don’t wanna go
I love you my town
You’ll always live in my soul
But I can see the sun’s settin’ fast
And just like they say
Nothing good ever lasts
Well, go on, I gotta kiss you goodbye
But I’ll hold to my lover
‘Cause my heart’s ’bout to die
Go on now and say goodbye
To my town
To my town
I can see the sun has gone down
On my town
On my town
Goodnight
Goodnight

Classic lyrics – Your Flag Decal

Supposedly Prine got the idea for this song when flag decals were falling out of the Readers Digests he was delivering as a mailman in Maywood, Ill. next to where I grew up.

th (1).jpg

While digesting Reader’s Digest
In the back of a dirty book store
A plastic flag with gum on the back
Fell out on the floor
Well, I picked it up and I ran outside
Slapped it on my window shield
And if I could see old Betsy Ross
I’d tell her how good I feel.

But your flag decal won’t get you
Into Heaven any more
They’re already overcrowded
From your dirty little war
Now Jesus don’t like killin’
No matter what the reason’s for
And your flag decal won’t get you
Into Heaven any more

Well I went to the bank this morning
And the cashier said to me
If you join the Christmas club
We’ll give you ten of them flags for free
Well I didn’t mess
Around a bit
I took him up on what he said
And I stuck them stickers all over my car
And one on my wife’s forehead

[Chorus]

Well I got my window shield so filled
With flags I couldn’t see
So I ran the car upside a curb
Right into a tree
By the time they got a doctor down
I was already dead
And I’ll never understand
Why the man
Standing in the Pearly Gates said…

But your flag decal won’t get you
Into Heaven any more
We’re already overcrowded
From your dirty little war
Now Jesus don’t like killin’
No matter what the reason’s for
And your flag decal won’t get you
Into Heaven any more
